UPI is no doubt doing a great job but sometimes I feel that if another country had something as fast and smooth as UPI they would have already taken it global china for example is working on making their own payment system international and it is quite similar to UPI their system may not be as polished but they are still pushing hard. Right now UPI is mostly stuck with INR and the idea seems to be that Indians can use it even when they travel abroad but I think we should start thinking bigger like building a system that allows payments in multiple currencies through UPI that could open up global opportunities for RuPay cards too. If we had done this earlier, we could have used UPI and RuPay well in places like Russia we missed that chance yes India’s local market is huge but the global market is even bigger and we need to think in that direction now.
