Just boarding a flight to Bengaluru. From the gate to the plane, used a bus, for literally 20 straight steps. Why so? Why not make a safe corridor to the plane, from the gate, to go on foot? Wouldn't it be cost effective for plane companies; better for environment ; and a wise decision overall? Or am I missing some bigger reasons?

They follow the protocol of IATA, it is for safety and operational reasons they say. If they start letting you all walk then it would create a jam in the tarmac so bus is better and it allows controlled movement and causes no danger. They already use Electric buses inside airport, and it's better for environment already ( as they claim )

You're missing literally everything about airport operations. Those "20 steps" could turn into 200m+ walk depending on gate assignment and aircraft parking position. Plus weather, security zones, ground traffic - airports aren't shopping malls where you can just stroll around freely.

Jet bridges limit aircraft types, require precise parking, need constant maintenance, and create bottlenecks. Remote stands with buses actually improve airport efficiency and reduce delays. Sometimes the "obvious" solution isn't better.
