The simple truth is that Cluely is being trashed because it gives you a moral high ground. The prejudice however, is nonsensical. 5 years ago, developers referred StackOverflow to build and fix. Now it's replaced by ChatGPT. "Cheating" as a branding narrative has a downside (the controversial angle of which is exactly what Roy Lee took a bet on and invoked conversations/debates). But the world moved past the memory oriented approaches decades ago. Calculator was once banned. Open book tests weren't a thing. Internet changes that. We have been cheating since forever now. Most people are living in the past where "cheating" had precedence over "progress" and the cheater was to be punished. You can't even reach Kardashev Type I in another 100 years with that speed of progress. Lastly, to those pointing fingers at A16Z for setting wrong benchmarks, the VC play is quite straightforward. We're living in an attention economy, product is hardly a moat. Virality is. Being quiet, underdog hustler out of Bay Area, fighting the tech giants was the narrative. That was the status symbol. Roy shot down the old guard with loud marketing and reckless stripping. You can crack down on Cluely. You can post an open-source version on Reddit. You can raise a couple million too. But that wouldn't solve for attention deficit. Your product will slowly die. Your cash will burn out. People will forget you. Roy, Shanmugan, and team are playing at the other side of all this. Cluely is inevitable. More so, a generation of blunt bold ambitious founders is inevitable. Cluely is just at the precipice of this inflection point. If you're too afraid, you'll die too. Thanks for your attention. Ciao!
