I have thought for same in recent day also. infact, I had college project regarding idea generation and validation. I worked on exactly the thing you are talking. based on the research we realised some do want to explore but most students are just very rigid to well known paths and do not wise to explore. until they walk to traditional path and fail. only then they try to explore till then lot of time get wasted. we could discuss on this.
