Asian paints: Holds India' s 50% market share in the paint industry. Established in 1942 in Mumbai by Champaklal Choksey, Chimanlal Choksi, Suryakant Dani, and Arvind Vakil, during World War II when imports were banned and local manufacturers gained a foothold. Initially started as a small partnership firm focused on low-cost paints for Indian households. Differentiated itself early by selling ready-to-use paints in small tins, breaking the norm of bulk buying and targeting the middle-class Indian home. Emphasized direct dealer network instead of relying on intermediaries, helping build deep local relationships. In the 1950s–70s, it became the largest paint company in India by focusing on decorative paints for households, which offered better margins than industrial paints. Pioneered computerized color mixing and color consultancy in India, enhancing customer experience and personalization. Launched the now-iconic brand mascot “Gattu” (designed by R.K. Laxman) in the 1950s, making it a household name. Adopted SAP ERP and digital tools early in the 2000s, making it a case study in tech-driven supply chain efficiency. Diversified into home décor, waterproofing solutions, adhesives, bath and kitchen spaces, creating a one-stop home improvement ecosystem. Operates in over 15 countries, with manufacturing facilities across India, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Has 26 manufacturing plants globally and a distribution network of over 70,000+ dealers in India alone. Holds over 50% market share in India’s decorative paints segment, dominating the industry. Revenue for FY2024: ₹344.89 billion (approx. 4.1 billion USD), with a net profit of ₹41.01 billion (approx. 490 million USD). Ranked among India’s most admired companies and consistently features in Forbes Asia's Fab 50 list. Run today by Amit Syngle, the current Managing Director & CEO (as of 2025).
