Jeff Bezos has officially entered the EV space — but not by playing Tesla’s game. His new bet, a startup called Slate Auto, just unveiled a $20,000 electric truck. It’s stripped down, minimal, and practical. No touchscreen. No chrome. No tech theatrics. Just a single motor, a manual gear shifter, and a design focused on functionality. The truck is built in a repurposed newspaper factory using off-the-shelf parts. It’s meant to be simple, customizable, and easy to repair — something that appeals to small business owners and first-time EV buyers. Within two weeks, Slate racked up over 100,000 reservations. The entry price? A $50 refundable deposit. This isn’t about EVs as lifestyle statements or luxury badges. It’s about utility, affordability, and fast production — a very different pitch from what the current market is chasing. The bigger question now: Is this the beginning of a more grounded, practical EV movement — or just a niche alternative in a market still obsessed with premium tech and self-driving dreams?
