Only ~4% of internet users run Linux on their personal devices,...... yet over 96% of the world’s servers operate on Linux or open-source systems.
Zerodha is proudly part of this backbone of the internet. How Open Source Became Zerodha’s Secret Sauce Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) isn’t just a tech stack.
It’s a mindset. Zerodha’s deep-rooted belief in openness and flexibility has shaped a system that is both resilient and future-ready. Technology That Powers Scale Tech Stack: Zerodha utilizes programming languages such as Go, Python, and Java. Their systems are supported by robust databases like PostgreSQL and Redis. Infrastructure: They rely on high-performance open-source tools like Nginx, HAProxy, and Kafka to maintain efficient and scalable operations. Philosophy: Zerodha actively contributes back to the open-source community by sharing internal tools and libraries, further strengthening the FOSS movement in India. FOSS has played a pivotal role in Zerodha’s ability to scale efficiently and serve millions of users. Resilience in Crisis: The 2024 Microsoft Outage In July 2024, a CrowdStrike update caused a widespread Microsoft Windows outage, triggering the infamous "Blue Screen of Death" on approximately 8.5 million devices globally. Zerodha remained completely unaffected during this global disruption, thanks to its GNU/Linux-based systems.
This incident underscored the robustness of FOSS and highlighted the strategic advantage of avoiding dependency on single vendors. Championing India’s Open-Source Movement Zerodha’s leadership has played an active role in promoting open-source initiatives beyond their company. FOSS United, co-founded by Dr. Kailash Nadh and Rushabh Mehta, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering open-source adoption across India. Projects such as Listmonk, Koanf, DungBeetle, and dns.toys reflect Zerodha’s deep involvement in empowering the FOSS community. Furthering their commitment, Zerodha has pledged an annual fund of $1 million to support global FOSS projects a significant step toward building a sustainable and open digital ecosystem. Looking Ahead What is the future of FOSS in India? How can open-source shape the technological landscape in the coming years? Don’t just adopt technology. Build it. Improve it. Share it.
Build with FOSS.
