Early Days and Initial Foray into Business Born into a modest Gujarati Jain family in 1962, Gautam Adani wasn't inclined towards academics and dropped out of college. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, he moved to Mumbai in 1978 at the young age of 16 with very little money. His first job in Mumbai was as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. This early experience in the diamond trade provided him with initial exposure to the world of business and trade. Independent Diamond Brokerage: After a couple of years, in 1981, Adani started his own diamond brokerage firm at Zaveri Bazaar. This marked his first independent venture and gave him crucial insights into trading and building network In the same year, his elder brother Mansukhbhai Adani purchased a plastics unit in Ahmedabad and called Gautam back to manage its operations. This proved to be a pivotal moment, exposing him to the possibilities of global trade through the import of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
