Charlie means that the learns always try to learn something new daily and thus when they go to sleep, they are wiser (because they learn something new) than were when they woke up the same day. And in the second line he says, that Doing this surely helps when you have a long time to do something. Like if you're in your 20s, you got a hell lot of time to learn and do whag you want, but if you're in 60s, it's a bit difficult. I hope you understand this now :)
