Depends. If the founder is broke like me with vision may need funds at the idea stage. If the founder had a good network may not need funds until he needs mass scaling.

Personal cash and connections change the game completely, no doubt. Where a founder starts from – financially and network-wise – makes a massive difference to the whole funding timeline and necessity. Huge reality check.
