Here’s Why You’re Not Able to Close Clients on Cold Calls as a Beginner. Last month, I joined an agency as a Pre-Sales Intern where my job was to make cold calls and generate leads. After a week, I started asking myself: "Why am I unable to convert prospects?" Here’s what I realized: 1. Reading a Script Instead of Having a Conversation: At the beginning, I was nervous. I kept worrying about “What should I say?” and “How should I respond?, etc. So, to stop that, I started reading scripts to avoid overthinking. For the first few days, it felt like a safety net. But soon, I noticed something strange —I started sounding like a machine. Whenever someone picked up the call, I would say: "Hello, are you this? "Yes" Okay! I'm from company XYZ. We provide this service. Do you want this?" And guess what? Most people hung up instantly. What Was I Doing Wrong? I was forcing an unknown person to listen to me. No one wants to hear a robotic sales pitch. Think about it—even people we know starts getting irritated if we talk non-stop without letting them speak. So why would a stranger listen to a cold caller doing the same? What I Did Differently Instead of blindly following a script, I researched about my prospects. I found out their pain points, called them, and started conversations like: "Hey [name], I noticed [a problem they are facing]. It might be causing you to lose [opportunities, revenue]. Have you thought about fixing this?" This approach made them curious instead of annoyed. (BTW, this actually got me fired from that agency. They told me, Just pitch our service, don’t waste time researching. If they’re interested, good. If not, hang up and block the number. ) 2. My Oral Communication Skills: I come from a small village in Bihar and studied in Hindi medium most of my life. Speaking fluently in English was a challenge (and still is). But I’ve already improved a lot, and working a lot to fix it. 3. Lack of Emotion in My Tone In the beginning, I sounded dull and lifeless. But after making 200-250 calls, I naturally developed confidence and energy. The key? Repetition and practice.
