Pet-Rock. A Pet Rock was a novelty item sold in the 1970s as a humorous "pet." It was simply a smooth, ordinary rock placed inside a small cardboard box with breathing holes and straw as bedding. The rock was marketed as the perfect low-maintenance pet—no feeding, walking, or grooming required. Created by Gary Dahl in 1975, the Pet Rock became a pop culture fad for a short time, capitalizing on the absurdity of having a rock as a pet.
