So, Tesla is finally coming to India! But will they sell a lot of cars? imo, they would. See, the Tesla Model 3’s expected price in India, including taxes, is about ₹35-40 lakh (TOI). And if you know, most BMW, Audi, and Mercedes cars cost way more than that. Thus, since Tesla, which has hype around the globe, would be launching at such low prices, why would a consumer buy an Audi A4 (₹50 lakh) and not a Tesla (expected ₹40 lakh). And just Audi’s pan-India sales were 5,861 in 2024, followed by BMW’s 15,721 in 2024 and 19,565 for Mercedes in 2024. If you do a quick math, that’s a total of 42,000 cars in India in a single year from just three car companies. So, after Tesla’s launch in India, even if 50% of new customers purchase a Tesla instead of existing premium brands, that would be 21,000 unit sales for Tesla—worth over $1 billion. The only issue is that existing brands’ high sales are also due to their dealership network across India, but still Tesla's sale woulf be huge... Key assumptions: Tesla Model 3 to be priced at ₹40 lakh (some reports say ₹70 lakh btw) and 50% of premium car buyers to buy Tesla.
