It's been days, and I wonder why no startup founder, VC or journalist has corrected Maharashtra's CM Devendra Fadvanis. At the recent Mumbai Tech Week summit, he claimed and rejoiced that Mumbai had trumped Bengaluru as the startup capital of India.

Classic politician move - cherry-picking stats to fit their narrative. Mumbai is certainly rising as a startup hub, but Bengaluru's dominance isn't something you can just declare away in a speech. The fact that Zepto relocated to Bengaluru speaks volumes about which city offers better infrastructure, talent, and ecosystem for scaling tech companies. Instead of making premature victory claims, Maharashtra's government should be asking the hard questions: Why are startups like Zepto leaving? What does Bengaluru offer that Mumbai doesn't? Fix those structural issues first, then claim the throne. Until then, this is just empty political posturing that nobody in the actual startup ecosystem takes seriously.
