Ice Age is making a comeback! No, not the movie, but real life 🦣 Scientists are bringing back the woolly mammoth. Not for fun—this could reshape ecosystems, advance genetic engineering, & even slow climate change. 🌍 Ecological restoration could help convert Arctic tundra back into grasslands, reducing greenhouse gases. 🐭 Recently, scientists at Colossal Bio showcased engineered “woolly mice” with mammoth-like traits using multiplexed genome editing. This is an advanced genetic engineering technique that allows for the simultaneous modification of multiple DNA locations within a genome. In this work, several genome editing approaches, including CRISPR, were used to generate mice with combinatorial knock-outs or knock-ins in ten genes involved in hair follicle development and lipid metabolism. This achievement also demonstrates the feasibility of expressing traits using information from 1.2 million years old DNA 🤯 https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.03.03.641227v1
