Do you fully own a domain? - Buying a domain from GoDaddy means leasing it, not owning it permanently - You control it as long as you renew it - GoDaddy is just a registrar managing domain registrations, so you can transfer your domain to another

They hold onto expired domains and make you pay a “redemption fee” to get them back. It’s like they steal your keys and charge you to unlock your own house. If you forget to renew, you should be able to buy it back at the same price, not some absurd ransom fee.
