Someone already owns the .com domain, but it's inactive. I'm considering getting the .in version. Do you think it could cause any issues in the future for my startup?

Yes. But the best thing you can do is go and look is the trademark is registered. If it isn't then let them have the .com and you go and own the trademark. Once you have the trademark, you can sue them for impersonating your company

If your startup grows and the .com owner notices, they might hike up the price or refuse to sell. If you can afford it, try negotiating and securing the .com now. Otherwise, you risk competitors or cybersquatters grabbing it later, and you might have to pay a hefty price to get it.

If the .com domain is not being used, then there’s nothing stopping you from getting the .in and building your brand. A strong brand presence will matter more in the long run. Many successful Indian startups (like Zerodha.in and Razorpay.in) started with a country-specific domain and made it work.
