The first edition took place on September 20, 1946, in Cannes, France, with films from 21 countries. The Palme d'Or was introduced in 1955 as the festival's highest honor, awarded to the best film in the competition. The Marché du Film was launched in 1959, now one of the world's largest film markets. Cannes has been a launchpad for influential films and directors, shaping global cinema trends. Over 40,000 industry professionals, including 12,500 buyers, producers, and investors, attend the festival annually. More than 2,000 films are submitted each year, with around 20–25 selected for the main competition. The festival generates an estimated €200 million annually for the French economy. Marché du Film hosts 14,000+ participants from 120+ countries, making it a key business hub for the film industry. Over 4,000 journalists from 90+ countries cover the event, making it one of the most widely reported festivals.
