It depends on how dedicated the founders are, but sometimes circumstances lead them to take a job. I remember the founder of Flatheads, Ganesh Balakrishnan.

They might not be experts, but they have experience in their field, which can help them secure a job. If they lack the skills for their respective fields, they wouldn't be considered founders.
