So I was reading this book last month. Generally, I am more into Bengali books, but Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck felt unique, so I gave it a try. The story follows two migrant workers, George and Lennie, during the Great Depression. They dream of owning a piece of land, but life isn’t kind to men like them. George, the sharp and practical one, takes care of Lennie, who is physically strong but has a childlike innocence. Their bond is both touching and fragile as they struggle against loneliness and harsh realities. The novel opens by painting a brief, idyllic scene of the landscape near the ranch to which George and Lennie are headed. What stands out is how Steinbeck explores the fragility of dreams, friendship, and human emotions. The ending is heartbreaking yet powerful, leaving you stunned and thoughtful. Despite its simplicity, the story lingers long after you’ve finished reading. If you’re into stories that pack an emotional punch, Of Mice and Men is a must-read.
