I used to think hard work alone would lead to growth. But after years in the same role, seeing others advance due to politics, I realized it’s not just about talent. Sometimes, promotions are more about who you know than what you do. This can drain motivation and create a culture where fresh ideas are stifled. Burnout hits when you feel like you’re always one step away from where you want to be. But here’s what I’ve learned: document your accomplishments, find allies who value skill over politics, and keep developing yourself. If you’ve voiced your goals and shown your worth but still see no growth, it may be time to explore new opportunities. Navigating workplace politics is tough, but don’t let it define your career. Seek environments where your skills are truly recognized and rewarded—places where growth happens based on merit, not just connections.
