A 2020 study revealed that Airbnb activity increased rents in popular Barcelona neighborhoods by 7% and drove home prices up by 17%. In response, Barcelona has announced its ambitious goal to eliminate all of its approximately 10,000 registered short-term rental listings by 2028. This decision marks one of the most stringent crackdowns on Airbnb and other tourist rentals globally.
