🏠 Barcelona is banning Airbnbs. Barcelona is taking a strong stand against overtourism, with thousands of Spaniards voicing their frustration over soaring housing and living costs. The city’s mayor has pointed to skyrocketing rents and home prices as the core issues, with experts highlighting short-term rentals, including Airbnbs, as a major factor. A 2020 study revealed that Airbnb activity increased rents in popular Barcelona neighborhoods by 7% and drove home prices up by 17%. In response, Barcelona has announced its ambitious goal to eliminate all of its approximately 10,000 registered short-term rental listings by 2028. This decision marks one of the most stringent crackdowns on Airbnb and other tourist rentals globally.
