Are you a generalist or a specialist? Think of the place you work at as your cricket team. An all-rounder is known as generalist and a spinner is known as specialist in the corporate world. Do they get paid the same? Depends on who you ask. If you ask a consulting firm or an agency, specialists in their team is paid about 5 times more than the average skilled generalist. If you'd ask an internet product company, generalists typically get paid equal or if not 10% more than the specialists on their teams. Why does this matter? Every org prioritizes a particular function/department they cannot compromise on. When the org's reputation is dependent on non-replicable processes, a specialist on their team who delivers such work is paid more while the operations team is paid on the market levels.
