Thank Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s grandiose vision and Sir Maurice Flanagan’s "hojayega" attitude. On October 25, Emirates took its maiden voyage from Dubai to Karachi and Mumbai using borrowed planes from Pakistan International Airlines—because who needs original aircraft? In its debut year, Emirates managed to haul 260,000 passengers and 10,000 tons of freight, much to Gulf Air’s endless annoyance. By the end of its first decade, Emirates was flying to 14 destinations and growing at a modest 30% annually. Never one to settle, in 1992, they thought, "Hey, let’s put video systems in every seat!" In 1993, onboard telecommunications seemed a good idea, and in 1994 they introduced in-flight faxing—because who doesn’t need to send a fax at 35,000 feet?
