Hiring Manager Round Experiences Hi everyone, I will be having my hiring manager round for Phonepe in coming week. Given that My design round wasn't gone very well but still they gave positive feedback. I wanna do my best in HM round. There are too many things which a hiring manager can ask for - current & past projects (are college projects also included?) in depth conversion - behavioural questions (including situational questions) - HR type questions - design problem (lld or hld) Can you guys share your mistakes/suggestions based on HM you have had till yet ? How should I be approaching the round ? And what Is utmost important? And if for some reason, my technical skills doesn't impress very much then what other subtle conversations can I continue with him to leave a overall good impression ?

Thanks everyone who replied to this post. I had my HM round and it wasn't like what I was expecting. Hiring Manager didn't touch any of my technical skills, he completely focused on making me understand the role in his team and allowing me to ask any questions around it. Briefly touched on how am I collaborating with other teams in my current role & what excites me and what are near term future goal etc But given that I prepared good for technical questions as well, answering above behavioural questions were easy.
I’ve had a few HM rounds, and here’s what worked and what didn’t— Mistakes were me simply not being prepared to discuss all aspects of past projects. It’s easy to focus on the technical details but don’t forget to highlight the impact of your work. Plus, Be personable. Show that you’re someone they’d want to work with. Even if your technical skills don’t shine, demonstrating good communication and problem-solving skills can leave a positive impression.
Yes, include college projects if they are relevant and showcase your skills. Be ready to explain your role, the technologies used, and the outcomes, know first why you’re interested in Phonepe, and how you see yourself fitting into their team. Revise the key concepts and be prepared to explain your reasoning clearly for LLD or HLD
Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. This helps you stay focused and provide a clear narrative. Be honest and show your enthusiasm for the role and company. Research Phonepe’s culture and align your answers to reflect their values. Brush up on the basics design problems and be ready to walk through your thought process. Even if you’re unsure, demonstrating a logical approach can impress the interviewer.
