The founding story of Tinder dates back to 2012 when Sean Rad, Jonathan Badeen, Justin Mateen, Joe Munoz, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Chris Gylczynski, and others came together to create what would become one of the most popular dating apps in the world. The app was initially developed under the company name Cardify, which was intended to be a platform for exchanging contact information. However, the team pivoted to focus on a dating app after realizing the potential of a simple, gamified dating experience. The creation of Tinder's iconic "swipe" feature was a pivotal moment in the app's development. Jonathan Badeen, one of Tinder's co-founders, came up with the idea after wiping a mirror clean and noticing the natural swipe motion. This innovative feature allowed users to quickly and easily sort through potential matches, making the app engaging and addictive.
