India is no longer the largest wedding market it's the USA but how's America the largest wedding market when its population is just half the size of India? See an average Indian family of 4 people, makes around 300,000 per annum but still manages to spend around 20L for a wedding Indians are known to save money in every aspect of life and ideally splurge money for important life events like marriage Hence the wedding market is as big as $50B with one crore weddings happening every year The reason, America stands out as the largest market is because of the simple insight that an average American gets married 2 or 3 times in his lifetime 40 to 50% of first marriages in the USA end in divorce and in India, it's just 1% This keeps me thinking, that our ancestors solved divorce well by doing expensive marriages and letting the world know about the event Since your status itself becomes a barrier to exiting something you announced

Bro, but in US they will never spend like us in marriages, our middle class family saves money for years to just spend on marriage. They spend their whole life savings on it , sometimes takes loan for it and in America they'll never spend more than 3-5% of their savings

Clever way for societies to disincentivize divorce, by making it a high-status high-cost affair that is hard to walk away from. If you've made a public lavish affair out of your wedding, it would be extremely awkward and embarrassing to turn around and get divorced soon after.
