This is a classic example of the demonstration/bandwagon effect in economics. People tend to copy each other to show that they are no less, and this behaviour arises from a feeling of jealousy and not being left out. Isn't it an interesting case of luck? It just goes to show that with the right marketing and a bit of luck, anything can become a sensation.
