Altman and others are just modern-day alchemists chasing the mythical Philosopher's Stone of AGI. I'll believe it when I see it. These things always seem "just around the corner" but aren't actually possible with our current tech/science.

I don't buy into these dystopian AI apocalypse scenarios. If we can develop AGI, we can absolutely encode it with robust ethics and instructions to ensure its capabilities are used to benefit humanity as a whole rather than be a threat.

Whether we "need" it or not is irrelevant - the AGI genie is already out of the bottle. Sam Altman and others are scrambling to be the first to develop it because the superiority it confers is so powerful. We have to be pragmatic and figure out how to align it with human values/ethics.

I think some people are being alarmist about this. AI will augment and assist humans rather than replace us entirely. We'll still be very much needed to manage the AI systems, provide high-level reasoning, emotional intelligence etc.

'm honestly terrified at the prospect of AGI/superintelligent AI doing all the work. It has the potential to make most humans obsolete in the workforce. What's the point of our existence if we don't have productive roles to play?
