Today I Learned #3 Why is it called Shampoo? Shampoo derives its name from the Hindi word "chāmpo," which means "to massage" or "to knead." The term's origin can be traced back to the Indian subcontinent, where ancient hair-cleansing traditions involved vigorously massaging the scalp with oils and natural ingredients. The word "chāmpo" referred to this massaging action, which was an integral part of the hair-cleansing process. When the practice of using cleansing agents for hair gained popularity in the West, the term "shampoo" was adopted to describe the act of washing and massaging the hair with these cleansing products, ultimately becoming the name for the hair-cleansing liquid itself.
