This is the interesting one. In my limited experience, I would say below qualities makes a differentiator: 1. Good listener : A risk advisor has to give all his/her ears to client. Many of us work with our biased mindset that we would get the gaps in these limited areas only 2. Professional skepticism: Professionals has to exercise skepticism at the time of listening and keep asking good questions to the client to get deep into the process 3. Consideration of actual reality of client and documentation: You need to be humble around the understanding the actual reality i.e. the problems that might be there because of lack of infrastructure, funds etc. However, at the same time client need to have the artefacts to justification of their rational documented that led them use their own practices against the actual process in place These are the 3 prominent qualities that I feel should be there. It might difer from consultants to consultant. However, would post details around this.

Would you choose to sit in front of a computer all day and code or get out and do some actual grunt work for lets say a company you're starting up?

A client gave 3 referrals. I closed 2 of them. They didn't see my website/testimonial, no negotiations (infact, upsold one client for an extra $500) - That’s the power of word of mouth.
