if you are asking for internship, this is what I did to land research internship at IIT during my college days ( I am from a pvt. college). go to nptel, see the topic I was interested in (data science and machine learning it was for me, this is 2019), saw the professors who were taking that course, reached out to them with my projects and willingness to work, emailed them, got a reply from 2 of them, and then went ahead. you can do this, or check research/academic pages of various top institutes, they have professor and their speciality along with email on the site.
