The growing role of fighting robots on the ground in Ukraine
Livemint

Drones have played a significant role in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but ground robots have been less prominent. Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGVs) have faced challenges in navigation and reliability. However, both sides are increasingly using UGVs, with Russia deploying small robotic tanks and Ukraine mass-producing fighter UGVs to counter Russian forces. These DIY UGVs, built by volunteers and using commercial components, are cost-effective and can be fielded in large numbers. Substituting expendable fighting machines for human troops could be an advantageous strategy in a prolonged war.

Russia is attempting to disrupt Ukraine's access to Elon Musk's Starlink satellites, which have played a crucial role in Ukraine's defense against Russia. Despite Russia's growing arsenal of electronic warfare systems, their efforts to jam Starlink signals have not been successful so far. Starlink's low-altitude satellites and strong signals make it difficult to be disrupted. Ukraine has also been retaliating by targeting Russian electronic warfare systems.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt's new drone startup, White Stork, aims to develop AI-driven attack drones to support Ukraine in their conflict with Russia. The drones would have the capability to identify targets autonomously, reducing the need for ground battles. Schmidt, now a licensed arms dealer, expressed frustration over the destruction caused by the Russian military in Ukraine. White Stork, co-founded with Udacity CEO Sebastian Thrun, focuses on producing advanced drones at lower costs with government backing. Schmidt's previous remarks highlighted Google's alleged loss in the artificial intelligence race due to remote work practices.

Nvidia plans to launch its new technology for humanoid robots in the first half of 2025, aiming to establish its presence in the growing robotics sector. The Jetson Thor computers, introduced earlier this year, are part of Nvidia's efforts to develop robots with improved autonomy and human interaction capabilities. Rather than manufacturing robots directly, Nvidia positions itself as a technology provider and collaborates with robot manufacturers like Siemens and Universal Robots. While humanoid robots present significant potential, widespread deployment is not expected until after 2025. China is also making significant advancements in humanoid robotics.

A salesman in Moscow has been selling Starlink internet terminals to Russian forces fighting in Ukraine, despite Russia officially banning the use of the SpaceX-developed service. This has given Russian forces an advantage by providing access to the internet and enabling the control of drones and other advanced technologies. The terminals are obtained through a shadowy supply chain, involving middlemen who purchase the hardware on platforms such as eBay and ship them to Russia. Similar activities have been observed in countries like Sudan, where Starlink is also banned. SpaceX has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
