Rivian customers will now have access to Tesla's Supercharger network through a new adapter. This makes Rivian the second automaker, after Ford, to tap into Tesla's charging infrastructure. Rivian will begin shipping these adapters for free to its customers in April. The move comes as many automakers have embraced Tesla's charging technology and announced compatibility with the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Rivian's existing vehicles, as well as its upcoming models, will feature built-in Tesla charging tech, expanding the charging options for Rivian owners.

Rivian electric truck and SUV owners will now have access to Tesla Supercharger stations, thanks to a software update allowing Supercharger access for Rivian vehicles. Rivian is using Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) and will provide a Tesla-made adapter to current owners for free. The adapter will allow Rivian owners to connect their vehicles to Tesla's charging plug. Furthermore, starting in 2025, Rivian will manufacture vehicles with the NACS inlet built into the vehicle. Rivian plans to install hundreds of its own DC fast chargers as part of its Adventure Network project.

Ford is now allowing owners of its electric vehicles (EVs) to reserve an adapter that enables them to charge at Tesla's Supercharger network. The adapter, which retails for $230, will be offered to Ford EV customers for free until July 1st. After that, customers will need to pay for the adapter. However, supply is expected to be limited in the early stages of availability. Tesla's Supercharger network is widely recognized as superior, and Ford customers will have access to the majority of the network using the adapter. The adapters are a short-term solution to the challenge of EV charging availability and reliability.

Elon Musk's decision to open Tesla's Supercharger network to other carmakers has been met with delays and shortages, leaving the network largely inaccessible to non-Tesla drivers. This has raised speculation that Musk may be having second thoughts about opening the network and potentially losing customers to other automakers. However, Tesla has recently announced increased production of adapters that non-Tesla drivers need to connect to Tesla chargers, easing concerns about the accessibility of the network. The slow rollout of these adapters raises questions about the decision made by other carmakers to switch to Tesla's charging standard, leaving them reliant on Tesla's strategy.

Ford is allowing its electric vehicle (EV) owners to access Tesla's Supercharger network through free adapters until July. The move comes as a solution to the dissatisfaction EV drivers face with the availability of public charging stations. By adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard plug, Ford is providing its drivers with access to 15,000 new chargers, expanding the total number of chargers to 126,000 across the US and Canada. This move is expected to improve customer satisfaction with public charging availability. However, access to older Tesla charging stations and select newer ones will still be exclusive to Tesla drivers.

The expansion of Tesla's Supercharger network has slowed down in recent months, following workforce reductions in April that affected the installation team. The number of new Supercharger ports opened in May through August decreased by 28% compared to the same period last year. Tesla has received government funding to install new chargers in various states, but still faces challenges in expanding the network for non-Tesla vehicles. However, the company has recently rehired some employees and is committed to building more Superchargers. The growth of the Supercharger network is crucial as millions of new electric vehicle drivers enter the market.

Tesla has reintroduced the "standard range" trim for Model S and Model X, offering a more affordable option tailored to reduced range preferences. The move results in a $10,000 price reduction and a range decrease of about 80 miles. The Model S now starts at $78,490 with a 320-mile range, and the Model X starts at $88,490 with a 269-mile range. This aligns with Tesla's strategy of adjusting prices to cater to a wider customer base while potentially offering post-purchase range unlocking options.
