PierSight readies ‘Varuna’ for ocean surveillance ops

Spacetech startup PierSight is preparing to launch its first satellite, named Varuna Mission, aboard the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) platform. The satellite aims to provide all-weather maritime surveillance by tracking ship movements, detecting oil spills, and monitoring critical infrastructure such as undersea cables and pipelines. PierSight plans to establish a constellation of satellites to offer persistent, real-time monitoring of human activity at sea. The startup has already partnered with government agencies, hedge funds, shipliners, and marine border protection agencies. The global satellite vessel tracking market is projected to have substantial growth in the coming years.
