Penalty provisions for dissemination of deepfakes can create deterrent effect: CUTS

Cutting-edge technology interventions should be deployed to combat the spread of deepfakes and misinformation, with penalty provisions acting as a deterrent, according to Amol Kulkarni, Director of Research at global think tank CUTS International. Kulkarni emphasized the importance of allowing internet users to verify the authenticity of content, particularly during election seasons, and highlighted the role of credible fact-checkers and trusted sources. While transparency is crucial, Kulkarni noted the need to balance information overload and implement technological solutions to tackle deepfakes and misinformation effectively. The Indian government recently issued advisories to label AI-generated content and prevent the hosting of unlawful material.
