Meta will label AI-generated content from OpenAI and Google on Facebook, Instagram

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has announced plans to label AI-generated images from companies like OpenAI and Google. The move aims to promote transparency and inform users when the content they see is digitally synthesized rather than authentic. Meta's decision comes as part of a broader effort to establish labeling standards for content created using generative AI models. The company will expand its existing practice of labeling content generated by its own AI tools to include images created by services from other companies. Meta will rely on invisible watermarks and metadata embedded in files to label AI-generated content. However, labeling tools for audio and video content are still under development.
