Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, confirmed that it has discovered hacking attempts on WhatsApp accounts belonging to U.S. officials from the Biden and Trump administrations. The attempts were linked to an Iranian hacker group known as APT42, which previously targeted the Trump campaign. The activity involved social engineering on WhatsApp accounts posing as technical support for various companies, such as AOL and Google. Although there is no evidence of compromised accounts, Meta has blocked the suspicious activity. The hackers targeted political, diplomatic, and public figures associated with the Biden and Trump administrations, located in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Iran, the U.S., and the U.K.

Meta to roll back some restrictions on Trump's Facebook, Instagram accounts

Meta has announced that it will lift some of the restrictions on former US President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts. The social media company had suspended Trump's accounts indefinitely after he praised the individuals who stormed the US Capitol in January 2021. However, Trump's accounts were reinstated earlier this year with increased monitoring for potential violations. Meta has now stated that as Trump is running against President Joe Biden, he will no longer be subject to this additional monitoring. Social media experts have criticized Meta for failing to moderate political content in the past. Trump was also banned from Twitter in 2021 but had his account restored by Elon Musk after he acquired the company in 2022.

Microsoft has reported that a hacking group affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guard successfully breached the account of a former senior adviser to a presidential campaign. The group used spear phishing techniques to send fake emails in an attempt to gain access to the campaign's accounts and databases. Former President Donald Trump claimed that his campaign was hacked by the Iranian government, but Microsoft stated that only publicly available information was obtained. There is uncertainty about the extent of the breach and whether leaked documents were related to the Iranian hack. The Iranians are believed to be motivated by a desire to see Trump defeated due to his actions against Iran during his presidency.

Hackers are using a backdoor in Oculus to compromise Facebook accounts, leading to wrongful suspensions for thousands of users. By creating Meta accounts linked to Oculus, the hackers bypass two-factor authentication and gain full access to victims' accounts. This problem has been ongoing since October 2022, with no official action taken by Meta or Oculus. Frustrated users are demanding solutions, and the issue has been reported to media, data protection agencies, and government officials. Content creator Dan Astin-Gregory is calling on Facebook and Meta to address this security breach promptly.
