Meta to roll back some restrictions on Trump's Facebook, Instagram accounts

Meta has announced that it will lift some of the restrictions on former US President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts. The social media company had suspended Trump's accounts indefinitely after he praised the individuals who stormed the US Capitol in January 2021. However, Trump's accounts were reinstated earlier this year with increased monitoring for potential violations. Meta has now stated that as Trump is running against President Joe Biden, he will no longer be subject to this additional monitoring. Social media experts have criticized Meta for failing to moderate political content in the past. Trump was also banned from Twitter in 2021 but had his account restored by Elon Musk after he acquired the company in 2022.

The changes will be applied automatically to existing teen accounts and newly created ones. The company will also direct teens to expert resources when searching for terms related to suicide and self-harm.

Meta targets spammy and impersonating accounts, focusing on reducing content distribution and monetization opportunities. Amid criticism over automated enforcement errors, Meta encourages authentic storytelling and warns against unauthorized reuse, including AI-generated content. These changes will roll out gradually, allowing creators time to adjust and access new insights on content distribution.

Meta Platforms has revealed the removal of approximately 63,000 accounts on Instagram involved in financial sexual extortion scams originating from Nigeria. These fraudsters, commonly known as "Yahoo boys," often deceive individuals by posing as individuals in need or promising high investment returns. In addition to the removed accounts, Meta also took down 7,200 Facebook accounts, pages, and groups offering scamming advice. The company reported attempts made against both adults and minors, the latter of which were shared with the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Meta aims to increase awareness and address concerns surrounding the harm caused by its services, as some governments have demanded action against child exploitation.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund. This comes after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with Trump privately and shows a change in perception towards the right. Previously, Trump had publicly attacked Zuckerberg, but the tech CEO has since praised Trump's response to an assassination attempt. Corporate donations to presidential inaugurations are common, with exceptions like Barack Obama in 2009 who refused corporate donations. Facebook did not donate to Biden's 2021 inaugural, but Google donated to both Trump and Biden's inaugurations.
