Anthropic and OpenAI have joined forces to address a major challenge in AI: easy connectivity to external data sources. Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open specification launched in November 2024, provides a standardized, royalty-free method for AI models to connect with outside data. This has received support from companies like Microsoft and OpenAI, promoting cross-industry collaboration. MCP could potentially reduce vendor lock-in and enable smaller AI models to interact seamlessly with various external resources.
