Personal care and beauty brand mCaffeine consistently grew its revenue year-on-year until FY23, rising from Rs 40 crore in FY20 to Rs 205 crore in FY23. However, the company’s scale declined by 6% in the last fiscal year due to a decrease in the sales of caffeinated beauty products. mCaffeine’s revenue from operations decreased to Rs 193 crore in FY24 from Rs 205.3 crore in FY23, its annual financial statement filed sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) shows. The dip in sales in FY24 comes as a surprise, as the firm’s co-founder and chief executive, Tarun Sharma, had claimed that mCaffeine would achieve a 50% increase in sales during the last fiscal, with profitability in sight for FY25. mCaffeine is a personal care brand specializing in caffeine-infused skincare and haircare products. The brand sells primarily online through e-commerce platforms and its own website. Sale of its products was the sole source of operating revenue for mCaffeine which decreased 6% to Rs 193 crore in FY24. The Powai-based company also earned Rs 8.9 crore from interest income that took its total income to Rs 201.9 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2024. Advertising costs dominated the expense sheet but decreased by 11.8% to Rs 106.17 crore in FY24 from Rs 120 crore in FY23. Employee benefit also dipped 2.8% to Rs 38.54 crore. Meanwhile, the costs of materials increased 12.5% and stood at Rs 67.67 crore. In the end, its total expense decreased marginally to Rs 287.33 crore in the last fiscal year. Akin to its scale, mCaffeine’s losses decreased by 6.8% to Rs 85.41 crore in FY24 from Rs 91.6 crore in FY23. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin stood at -240.19% and -40.42%, respectively. On a unit basis, the company spent Rs 1.49 to earn a rupee of operating revenue in FY24. The Mumbai-based company reported cash and bank balances of Rs 32 crore and current assets of Rs 108.9 crore in FY24. According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, mCaffeine has raised Rs around Rs 337 crore in total funding and was last valued at Rs 1,000 crore. With over 12% stake, Amicus Capital is the largest external shareholder, followed by RPSG Ventures and Paragon Partners. mCaffeine has been seeking additional funding for over a year, but the firm has not attracted interest from new or existing investors. As a result, mCaffeine is reportedly exploring acquisition opportunities due to its unsuccessful fundraising efforts. mCaffeine's competitor, Wow Skin also saw a 9.5% drop in revenue during FY24, while Minimalist achieved a 90% increase in its scale to Rs 347 crore in FY24, along with profitability. MamaEarth, now a publicly listed company, witnessed a decline in revenue in Q2 FY25. mCaffeine’s troubles were not unexpected, even if the brakes on growth are a function of its efforts to extend the runway. We have highlighted the issue with high advertising costs and lack of flagship products before, and FY24 has simply delivered proof. mCaffeine clearly faces challenges that a caffeine shot looks unlikely to solve.

CarTrade’s revenue from operations surged 26.6% to Rs 176 crore in Q3 FY25 in contrast to Rs 139 crore in Q3 FY24, as per the firm’s unaudited consolidated financial results sourced from the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The Mumbai-based company operates in three segments: Consumer, Remarketing, and Classifieds. Income from the consumer segment formed 39% of the total operating revenue which increased to Rs 68 crore in Q3 FY25 from Rs 50 crore in Q3 FY25. Income from the remarketing and classified segment stood at Rs 58 crore and Rs 50 crore in the third quarter of the ongoing fiscal year. CarTrade also added Rs 17 crore from other non-operating businesses which tallied its overall revenue to Rs 193 crore in Q3 FY25, compared to Rs 152 crore in Q3 FY24. On the expense front, employee benefits expenses formed 53% of the overall spending which went up a modest 7.3% to Rs 73 crore during the period. This cost also includes share-based expenses of Rs 3.36 crore. CarTrade’s overall expenses increased 12% to Rs 140 crore in Q3 FY24 from Rs 125 crore during Q3 FY24. The strong growth and controlled spending enabled CarTrade to achieve a turnaround and post a net profit of Rs 45.5 crore in Q3 FY25, compared to a loss of Rs 23.5 crore in Q3 FY24. However, the company had already recorded a revenue of Rs 472 crore and a net profit of Rs 99 crore during the nine months of the ongoing fiscal year. CarTrade recorded a 4.78% hike in its share price today and is trading at Rs 1,433.3 (as of 12:47) with a total market capitalization of Rs 6,789 crore or $800 million.

Full-stack metal supply-chain platform Metalbook recorded nearly Rs 800 crore of gross revenue for the fiscal year ended March 2024. However, its losses surged over two-fold in the same period. Metalbook’s gross revenue, known as gross merchandise value (GMV), surged 76% to Rs 796 crore in FY24 from Rs 452 crore in FY23, according to its financial statement sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC). Founded in 2021, Metalbook is a full-stack procurement platform that helps businesses, including SMEs, with inventory liquidation, logistics, and credit, among others. It claims to work with over 500 manufacturers, dealers, and suppliers, including ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel, Tata Steel, and JSW, across 16 countries. These services were the only source of revenue for the Gurugram-based company in FY24. The firm also made an additional Rs 2.5 crore from interest on deposits and investments, which pushed its total income to Rs 799 crore in FY24. For the supply chain platform, the cost of procurement of materials was the company’s largest cost center, accounting for 96% of the overall expenditure. This cost surged by 75.34% to Rs 782 crore in FY24. Employee benefit expenses jumped 90.48% to Rs 16 crore. Provisions for bad debts stood at Rs 3.7 crore, while other expenses—including legal, technology, and travel—contributed Rs 14.3 crore. These factors drove total expenses up by 77.78% to Rs 816 crore in FY24. Despite the 76% growth in scale, Metalbook’s loss spiked by 2.8 times to Rs 17 crore in FY24 from Rs 6 crore in FY23. Its return on capital employed (ROCE) and EBITDA margin stood at -9.65% and -1.27% respectively. On a unit basis, the company spent Rs 1.03 to earn a rupee of gross revenue in FY24. The Delhi-based company’s current assets stood at Rs 193 crore, which includes Rs 61 crore of cash and bank balance in the previous fiscal year. According to TheKredible, Metalbook has raised $23 million of funding to date. Axilor, Foundamental, and RTP Global are the major investors who hold 13.55%, 8.23%, and 5.81% of the company respectively.

However, the company achieved a 24% increase in profits, driven by controlled expenses and an increase in non-operating income during the same period. A23’s net revenue was recorded at Rs 841 crore in FY24 from Rs 839 crore in FY23, its consolidated annual financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) show. Notably, the firm's gross revenue grew by 31% to Rs 1,378 crore in FY24, up from Rs 1,051 crore in FY23. Of this, Rs 537 crore was paid out to players, resulting in a net revenue of Rs 841 crore for FY24. The platform fee, or commission, charged as a percentage of the buy-in fees from users, remained the sole revenue source for A23 during FY24. Additionally, the platform earned Rs 37 crore, primarily from interest on deposits and current investments, bringing its total revenue to Rs 878 crore in FY24. The company claims to have over 5 crore players on its platform and operates five games - rummy, fantasy, poker, carrom, and pool. A23 has not disclosed its overheads much and booked Rs 515 crore, which is 68% of the overall cost under the miscellaneous head. This might include all the major costs including advertising, servers, and hosting. A23’s employee benefits grew 41% to Rs 138 crore in FY24 from Rs 98 crore in FY23. Its legal, safety and security, printing, traveling, and other overheads pushed the total expenditure to Rs 761 crore in FY24. Despite the flat scale, the controlled expenditure and increase in other income helped A23 to post a 24% increase in its net profits to Rs 72 crore in FY24, compared to Rs 58 crore in FY23. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin improved to 11.5% and 15.26%, respectively while the expense-per-revenue ratio stood at Rs 0.90. At the end of FY24, A23’s total current assets were recorded at Rs 613 crore with cash and bank balances of Rs 534 crore.

Info Edge, the parent company of Naukri and 99acres, published its financial statements on Thursday. The consolidated figures showcased a modest 8% increase in revenue for FY24. However, the company made a turnaround in its bottom line, transitioning from a loss of Rs 70 crore in FY23 to a profit of Rs 594 crore in FY24. Info Edge’s revenue from operations grew 8% to Rs 2,536 crore in FY24 from Rs 2,345 crore in FY23, its consolidated financial statements disclosed with the stock exchange shows. Meanwhile, the company posted a 4.8% increase in revenue to Rs 657 crore in Q4 FY24 from Rs 627 crore in Q3 FY24. The Sanjeev Bikchandani-led firm operates through different segments. Income from Naukari.com and related portals formed 74.1% of its total revenue which increased 7.49% to Rs 1,880 crore in FY24. Its other segment 99acres saw a 23.6% growth to Rs 351 crore in FY24. Jeevansathi and Shiksha combined participated with Rs 305 crore of revenue during FY24. Info Edge made Rs 414 crore from non-operating activities tallying its total revenue to Rs 2,950 crore in FY24. Akin to other internet companies, its employee benefits accounted for 61% of its total expenditure which grew only 2.83% to Rs 1,128 crore in FY24 from Rs 1,097 crore in FY22. Info Edge’s network/internet, advertising cum promotional, legal, traveling and other overheads push the total expenditure to Rs 1830 crore in FY23 from Rs 1,858 crore in FY23. Note 1: The company recorded exceptional items of Rs 110 crore and Rs 509 crore in FY24 and FY23 respectively due to the decrease in the carrying value of investments. This was the primary reason for the significant loss posted in FY23. Note 2: The company has 15 joint ventures including Makesense, Happily Unmarried’s Ustraa (now acquired by VLCC), Shopkirana, Juno, Sploot and others during FY24. Info Edge recorded a share loss of Rs 131 crore and 231 crore in FY24 and FY23 respectively in its joint ventures which also makes a part of its consolidated figures and reflects losses in the financial statements. At the end, Indo Edge posted a net profit of Rs 594 crore in FY24 where the figures stood at a loss of Rs 70 crore in FY23 (refer note 1 and 2). On a unit level, it spent Rs 0.72 to earn a rupee in FY23.

The company also made Rs 46 crore from interest on fixed deposits and gain on sale of current investments which tallied its overall revenue to Rs 3,521 crore in FY24 from Rs 2,732 crore in FY23. Similar to other gaming companies, Gameskraft has over a dozen brand ambassadors, including Harbhajan Singh, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Abhinav Bindra, and has run several campaigns on social media and TV. This pushed its advertising costs up by 113% to Rs 1,315 crore in FY24 from Rs 616 crore in FY23. Gameskraft employee benefits grew 23.5% to Rs 463 crore in FY24. This includes Rs 12 crore as ESOP cost which is settled in cash. Its legal, communication, domain, web hosting, and other overheads took the overall cost up by 71.7% to Rs 2232 crore in FY24 from Rs 1300 crore in FY23. The more than two-fold increase in advertising costs outpaced Gameskraft's revenue growth, causing its profits to drop by 10.8% to Rs 947 crore in FY24 from Rs 1,062 crore in FY23. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin stood at 69.4% and 37.46% respectively with an expense-to-earning ratio of Rs 0.64. At the end of FY24, Gameskraft's total current assets were recorded at Rs 1,680 crore with the cash and bank balance of Rs 306 crore. In the real-money gaming sector, MPL reported a 22.2% increase in revenue from operations to Rs 1,068 crore in FY24, while also achieving positive cash flow during the year. Gameberry saw a 46.9% growth in revenue to Rs 461.7 crore, with a 150% surge in profit to Rs 92.8 crore in the same period. Meanwhile, major competitors such as Dream11 and A23 have yet to release their financial results for FY24.

Its cost of materials, legal, technology, traveling, and other overheads took the overall cost up by 22% to Rs 144 crore in FY24 from Rs 118 crore in FY23. The increased advertising and commission costs led Treebo to raise its losses by 16.7% to Rs 28 crore in FY24, compared to Rs 24 crore in FY23. Its ROCE and EBITDA margin stood at -540% and -18.1% respectively. On a unit level, it spent Rs 1.32 to earn a rupee in FY24. The company’s total current assets stood at Rs 34 crore with cash and bank balances of Rs 7 crore in the previous fiscal. According to startup data intelligence platform TheKredible, decade-old Treebo has secured Rs 566 crore (approximately $70 million) in funding from investors including Accor, Elevation Capital, Matrix Partners, and Bertelsmann. The company’s most recent major funding, amounting to $16 million, was raised in June 2021. Treebo competes directly with Bloom Hotels and FabHotels. In FY24, Bloom Hotels saw its operational revenue rise by 73.6% to Rs 250 crore, with a profit of Rs 14 crore. FabHotels recorded Rs 224 crore in operating revenue for FY23 but has not yet filed its FY24 annual report.

While all online travel agents (OTAs) including MakeMyTrip, Ixigo, Yatra and EaseMy Trip have been profitable for past several quarters, Cleartrip has recorded over Rs 800 crore loss in the fiscal year ending March 2024, despite achieving 98% year-on-year revenue growth. For background, Cleartrip was acquired by Flipkart in April 2021 for $40 million in a distress sale. Cleartrip’s net revenue from operations grew by 98% to Rs 97 crore in FY24 from Rs 49 crore in FY23, its annual financial statements sourced from the Registrar of Companies show. Focusing on its gross operations, Cleartrip collected Rs 369 crore in service charges from customers and Rs 240 crore in commissions and incentives in FY24. However, the company provided discounts totaling Rs 525 crore on its services and incentives, which was unexpected and brought its net operating revenue down to Rs 97 crore for FY24. This covers the revenue side; now let’s look at the major cash burn for the Flipkart-owned company in FY24. Cleartrip allocated 40% of its total costs to employee benefits in FY24, which surged by 61.3% to Rs 400 crore. This amount includes Rs 180 crore in non-cash ESOP costs. Excluding ESOPs, Cleartrip’s expenditure on salaries and wages stood at Rs 220 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2024. The firm spent Rs 128 crore on advertising and marketing, while its commissions and brokerage costs amounted to Rs 70 crore in FY24. Cleartrip also allocated Rs 91 crore to payment gateway charges, which is notable given that its revenue stood at only Rs 97 crore. Its outsourcing, information technology, legal and other overheads took the overall cost up by 26.7% to Rs 988 crore in FY24 from Rs 780 crore in FY23. See TheKredible for the detailed expense chart. Cleartrip refused to comment on queries sent by Entrackr. The increase in overall cost outpaced the revenue growth which led its losses to increase by 18.4% to Rs 810 crore in FY24, compared to Rs 684 crore in FY23, while its EBITDA margin stood at-399%. In FY24, its expense-to-earning ratio was recorded at Rs 10.1 as compared to Rs 15.9 in the previous fiscal year. On the competition side, MMT reported revenue of $792 million (Rs 6,650 crore) in FY24, along with $216.7 million (Rs 1,820 crore) in profits. Meanwhile, Ixigo, EaseMyTrip, and Yatra have recorded Rs 656 crore, Rs 590 crore, and Rs 448 crore in revenue, respectively.

The 26-year-old educational platform mainly provides offline coaching for Civil Services Examination (CSE). Income from coaching services accounted for 94.8% of the total operating revenue, which increased by 37.6% to Rs 384 crore in FY24 from Rs 279 crore in FY23. The remaining income is generated from the sale of study materials, including pen drives, books, test papers, and other resources. Drishti IAS operates seven institutes, including two in Delhi, three in Uttar Pradesh, and one each in Jaipur and Indore. Its Mukherjee Nagar Institute is the largest revenue contributor, accounting for 58% of the total coaching income. Employee benefits and faculty charges constituted 40% of its overall cost, increasing by 41% to Rs 117 crore in FY24 from Rs 83 crore in FY23. Drishti IAS's advertising spending also jumped 3.4X to Rs 51 crore in FY24. Drishti IAS's overall expenditure increased to Rs 289 crore in FY24 from Rs 197 crore in FY23. Higher spending on employee benefits and advertising resulted in a modest 3.4% increase in net profits, which rose to Rs 90 crore in FY24 from Rs 87 crore in FY23. The company's ROCE and EBITDA margin were recorded at 55.7% and 33.73%, respectively, while the expense-to-revenue ratio stood at Re 0.71. As of March 2024, the company's total current assets were valued at Rs 88 crore, with cash and bank balances of Rs 54 crore.
