Intel's programmable chip unit, now known as Altera, sees a significant opportunity in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The company believes its programmable chips fill a niche market between custom processors designed by cloud computing companies and general-purpose AI chips made by Nvidia. With the hardware requirements for AI still evolving, Altera aims to stay at the forefront of innovation by providing flexible and adaptable solutions. The market for programmable chips is estimated to be around $8-$10 billion by 2023, but Altera believes the potential is even larger. While Intel Foundry currently manufactures Altera's Agilex line of chips, it remains uncertain if the forthcoming Agilex 3 chips will be produced in-house.

Google announced a new version of its data center artificial intelligence chips, as well as an Arm-based central processor. The tensor processing units (TPUs) are seen as a viable alternative to Nvidia's advanced AI chips and can be accessed through Google's Cloud Platform. The new Arm-based CPU, named Axion, offers superior performance to x86 chips and general-purpose Arm chips in the cloud. Google aims to make it easy for customers to bring their existing workloads to Arm without the need for re-architecting or re-writing their apps. The TPU v5p chip, which offers twice the performance of the previous generation, is now available on Google Cloud.

Apple has quietly launched MLX, an open-source machine learning framework designed to run on Apple's chips. Although it may bring generative AI apps to Apple products in the future, it seems Apple has fallen behind in the AI space, with Google and OpenAI already battling it out with their advanced AI products. However, Apple's CEO Tim Cook has developed an internal chatbot service called "AppleGPT," and the company's Head of AI, John Giannandrea, aims to power Siri with generative AI. Apple's push into AI comes late compared to rivals like Google and Microsoft.

The U.S. measures to limit the export of advanced AI chips to China may create an opportunity for Huawei to expand in its home market as Nvidia retreats. Huawei has been developing its own chips comparable to Nvidia's, but still lags behind in performance and ecosystem. However, if Huawei can replicate Nvidia's ecosystem and overcome intellectual property rights challenges, it could grab Nvidia's market share in China. This aligns with Huawei's goal of becoming a key provider of computing power for AI and promoting self-sufficiency in China.

China's chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC), is testing the limits of U.S. authority in its quest to manufacture advanced chips. SMIC is the sole maker of advanced chips in China and is developing chips that can power advancements in AI and 5G networks. The U.S. has been fighting to keep this technology out of Chinese hands, fearing it could give China a military advantage. While SMIC still lags behind competitors like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., experts believe that if SMIC can continue to advance its chip technology, it could potentially challenge U.S. dominance in the sector.
