Govt Turns To Startups, Academia To Generate Telecom IPRs

Ericsson has signed an MoU with IIT-Kharagpur for joint research in AI and development of 6G networks. The Indian government aims to secure a 3% share in global telecom IPRs and the telecom equipment market by 2027. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is encouraging global companies like Nokia, Ericsson, Cisco, and Qualcomm to collaborate with Indian academic institutions on new technologies. The DoT plans to support promising projects through the Telecom Technology Development Fund and is promoting industry-academia partnerships to make India self-reliant in the telecom sector. Several global firms have already partnered with Indian academic institutions, such as Ericsson with IIT-Kharagpur for AI and 6G research. India has a thriving startup ecosystem and the government is initiating initiatives to help startups raise funds from VCs.
