Gig worker demand set to rise 40% during festive season peak

Quick commerce platforms like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto are expected to see a 40% increase in demand for gig delivery riders during the festive season, leading to the employment of an additional 10-12 lakh gig riders. Ecommerce and food delivery platforms are also expected to onboard 20% more gig riders during this time. Quick commerce represents a smaller share of the overall demand, but it is rapidly increasing. The increase in demand is likely to be fulfilled by temporary workers, including those from surrounding villages, as well as existing gig riders. Delivery workers can expect higher earnings during the festive season due to increased demand and bonuses. However, unlocking these benefits can require long working hours. There is a need for platforms to provide better benefits and guarantees to the gig workers during this period.
