FCC chair proposes cybersecurity rules in response to China's Salt Typhoon telecom hack

The US Federal Communications Commission chairwoman, Jessica Rosenworcel, has proposed that communications service providers must submit annual certifications verifying their preparedness against cyberattacks. This proposal is a response to an alleged hacking attempt by a group known as Salt Typhoon, which has targeted American telecommunications companies to steal data. The Commission aims to establish a modern framework to enhance network security and effectively prevent and respond to cyberattacks. The proposal is currently under consideration by other commissioners and, if approved, will take immediate effect. Major telecom companies have yet to comment on the proposal.
