Telecom sector opposes US plan to reinstate net neutrality rules

The US telecom industry opposes the reinstatement of net neutrality rules by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The rules, which were repealed in 2017, prohibit internet service providers from blocking or throttling traffic or offering paid fast lanes. USTelecom, representing companies like AT&T and Verizon, called the effort unnecessary and counterproductive. NCTA, representing major internet providers including Comcast, expressed concerns about the plan jeopardizing broadband access in rural areas and predicted years of litigation. The FCC wants to assume new regulatory oversight, a priority for President Joe Biden. Supporters argue that net neutrality is crucial for an open internet. Some Republicans believe it will increase prices and hinder innovation.
