DoT, telcos deploying system in phases to stop overseas spoof calls

- The Department of Telecom (DoT) is working with telecom service providers to block incoming international spoofed calls utilizing an advanced system. - The system is being rolled out in two phases: first, at the service provider level to block calls spoofed with their own subscribers' numbers, and second, at a central level to prevent calls spoofed with numbers from other service providers. - Cyber criminals exploit the 'calling line identity' feature to manipulate the origin of calls, leading to incidents involving threats, fake arrests, and impersonation of government officials. - The implementation of the system has already stopped approximately 4.5 million spoofed calls from entering the Indian telecom network, accounting for about one-third of total spoofed calls. - The next phase will involve a centralized system that aims to eliminate the remaining spoofed calls across all telecom service providers.
