Data centres are wary of sustainability push in govt’s AI mission GPU tender

- The government's IndiaAI Mission requires bidders of the GPU tender to have a power usage effectiveness (PUE) less than 1.35. - Achieving the required PUE could lead to increased capital expenditure for data centers, which may result in higher costs for customers. - PUE measures the energy efficiency of a data center, with lower ratios indicating better efficiency. - Some industry executives argue that the PUE criterion is difficult to achieve and should be removed to allow for the use of different technologies. - Water-based cooling solutions and dry coolers, which consume more electricity, are not sustainable in a water-scarce country like India. - Upgrading traditional data centers to technologies like direct-to-chip liquid cooling can help achieve better PUE.
