Cost, integration and scalability: Hurdles for Open RAN in India

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has secured contracts with traditional network vendors like Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung, raising concerns about the future of Open RAN technology in India's telecom sector. Open RAN allows the sharing of hardware and software components, potentially reducing costs. However, challenges around cost effectiveness, scale, legacy infrastructure, and standardization have diminished enthusiasm for the technology. Notably, Japan's Rakuten and enterprise open-source solutions company Red Hat remain optimistic about the transition to Open RAN. Trials with virtualized RAN (vRAN) have been conducted by Vi and Samsung, Airtel and Mavenir, and Reliance Jio is developing its own open stack.
