The US government has allocated $42 million to support the development of the Open RAN (O-RAN) standard. O-RAN enables wireless providers to use different hardware and software for their cellular networks, allowing for cheaper and interoperable equipment. The funding aims to challenge Huawei's dominance in the global cellular network hardware market. Verizon and AT&T have formed a consortium called ACCoRD to work on accelerating compatibility and commercialization of Open RAN. O-RAN also promises faster network build-outs and more agile networks. Dish Network has been working on its own O-RAN network, known as Project Genesis.
